Wow, with this one, you guys put a lot of stuff out there to be criticized about, fairly, or unfairly.
A challenge with music is that where you are in life matters so much with how the music is going to influence you.
When you had that kid out there singing about how God is doing a new thing, I immediately was brought back to the ’80s when I was being converted and the band “DC Talk” (who that kid was trying to imitate) was very helpful to me at listening to better stuff than I was before that.
Then you put on some of the wrap you like, and it seemed to lack any power to move the heart.
Please keep doing what you’re doing.

Good idea for a podcast and I don’t follow Christian music but think rapping for Jesus is a bit much. Most of the ugly music you presented makes me glad that I am flipping tone deaf. You weren’t kidding that some of this was going to be bad in the worst sense of the word. I couldn’t go the distance as far as the whole episode and I have been a fan of you guys for years.
I don’t think you gave Christian music a fair judgement. Many Christian artists use scripture or the love of Jesus as the focal point of their music. As a cradle Catholic who left because all I was taught was that God was an angry god that only wanted the punish. I attended a non denominational church where the emphasis was put on having a relationship with Jesus. Through their services and Christian music I was taught the love of Jesus and how great the mercy of God is. That gave me a new respect for what God was asking me to turn away from and helped me see His “rules” as love, not control. I enjoy listening to artists like Micah Tyler who sings “His mercies are new today,” Mercy Me singing to God “I know you’re able and I know you can…even if you don’t my hope is in you,” and many others.
Side note: because of the relationship I developed with Jesus through Christian music I came back to the Catholic faith.
I completely agree with you Katherine. I am also a cradle Catholic and I listen to Christian music. I attend a lot of youth retreats as a youth minister and I see the youth getting energized by Christian music and I think it is needed. The music is great quality and it teaches great things – God loves us, God is always with us, God forgives us even though we sin. It may not be of our Catholic religion, but it has great points to strengthen our faith. I have had tough times in my life and this music has helped me get through those times, along with church and prayer. I don’t think the guys needed to go into the bad music from the 80s and 90s – I am pretty sure we all agree that is bad. I also think the guys may be showing some Catholic bias about how evangelicals worship. As a Catholic in the south, I am constantly attacked for being a Catholic and how we worship. I always pride myself on how I am accepting of how other’s may worship – it is their faith and religion. I kind of feel the guys were reaching on what was wrong with Hillsong music because they don’t follow the Catholic liturgy. I don’t think we should pushing for a more evangelical liturgy, but I think Christian music is a great form of energizing our faith and reaching out to those that may be searching for their faith.
Katherine amd Jason, I have had other people tell me they’ve had similar experiences with this genre of music also, i.e. that it brought them closer to the faith and became meaningful to them in their personal prayer. However, I think a word of caution is in order. “Praise and Worship” music is not permitted during the Mass. It is not sacred. Religious, devotional, inspirational, yes, but not sacred. The caution is that oftentimes Youth Ministers suggest this music for use during the Mass as a way to get more youth to attend. Pastors and music directors are often unaware that it is inappropriate for use during the Liturgy, and before long, there’s a “rock band” at Mass, and the universality of sacred worship is lost. The music ceases to support the Liturgical action.
The reason youth get “energized” by this music is because it is emotionally manipulative. When the retreat is over, the youth are excited, yes, then return to their parish and find the Mass (and traditional Benediction) “boring.” And many years later, after attending Mass with “Praise and Worship” music exclusively, our musical heritage and possibly our unique beliefs as Catholics, are lost. Hilllsong music is not theologically sound from a Catholic perspective (I can’t understand why NET Ministries uses it). So, caution!

I grew up as a Protestant teenager in the early 2000s. Christian rock was top notch! Relient K, Thousand Foot Krutch, P.O.D., Switchfoot, Kutless, Red, Audio Adrenaline, Family Force Five, Flyleaf, etc. So good, and wholesome. I just recently discovered Jesus Wannabeez (they did a more biblically-sound version of the popular Christian song “Reckless Love of God” – they called theirs “Sovereign Love of God”) and I am a big fan!
I forgot to mention my favourite Christian rap artists who continue to make excellent quality sounds and lyrics: Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii, etc.
That Gregorian Beats is great, but I just found Dan Gibson Illumination on Amazon. I listen to a lot of different Gregorian chants but this one will invoke an emotional response beyond words. It is absolutely beautiful thought I would share that with you. It is sad he passed away in 2006 but he put this album together and it is amazing.
