Anyone fitting into the ‘shoes of the fisherman’ after Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Francis is going to have a tough job and hopefully he will not be aloof from his flock. We are not used to that any longer. There was previously a divide between intellectual popes and popes of the people. I think Pope Benedict stepping down was a courageous act because he knew he couldn’t fulfill the duties of the papal office.
Papal betting is news to me but not surprised it is done in my ancestral home or Ireland. Fr. Rich I hope you do expand your podcasts into other markets and I am thinking religious education at the schools. I am still chuckling RS at how you wrested control back from RD when he was going too far off the course of the podcast at the start of the show. You guys can be funny primarily because you know each other so well and are comfortable in your friendships. No rambling allowed. However, RD’s bishop sounds like a good guest for the show. Personally I would like to hear about what bishops do and how they do it plus their experiences. They are far removed from the people.
I wish our Democrats would take a leaf from a page of the 2013 conclave and consolidate their political support behind the most viable candidates instead of people still jumping into the race. I appreciate the patriotism for the most part but people like Sanders who is past his Sell By date need to step down and some should never have stepped up.
Yes, I am one of the people in the world who prays for a Good Shepherd when papal elections occur. I want him not to be wrapped up in the politics and power of the church just the people. We have had true followers of Christ as Popes in my lifetime. I want the trend to continue. Pope Francis is also cleaning up the decadence that comes from the arrogance of some of the hierarchy. He does it so quietly and by example.
One of my girlfriends is from the Philippines and she and her Italian husband are devout Catholics. I will check more into what the cardinal from the Philippines is like. We need progressives. I agree with you Fr. Rich, the people and clergy of the Philippines and Africa lead the way for loving their religion and being devoted to it. I would welcome a Pope from either place. I wouldn’t completely rule out an American Pope not too far off in the distance despite our seat of world power. God takes care of his Popes so age hasn’t been too much of a handicap for any of them. Think Adam living to 930 years of age, not to mention the ages of Moses, Abraham, Elijah etc. when they were called home. God has a wicked sense of humor when it comes to calling out the aged to serve Him.
A lot of counseling and support from the Church would help many turn away from the final decree of marital divorce. I know of one couple who is going strong fifteen years after pastoral counseling. They had been signing papers at their worst point of schism.
How about a first woman Pope? Wasn’t there a pro tem Pope Joan during one of the many tough times the Church had, or was that a legend? I know the traditionalist RS would probably not support a woman Pope. How do you feel about a woman Pope guys? We have women in military combat why not spiritual? Of course, I can’t imagine that happening as the steps forward to even having women priests are not happening.
I agree with Leo being the possible next Pope name but would add John to the list again. John of the gospel and Revelations was probably closer to the family of Jesus than any other apostle. He stood in for Joseph at the foot of the Cross. I agree with you Fr. Rich, I think the Pope after Francis would not take his name as it would be too soon an event.

You are a Jackass. Theologically, a Female Pope or Priest cannot exist. They would bear no natural resemblance to Christ. The Church has always said that if Jesus wanted to ordain women, He would have. Therefore, the case is closed. Forever, despite what left-wingers, who should know better, might say.

You guys have to emphasize that the Camerlengo gently taps on the forehead of the deceased Pontiff because a Physician would have had already medically & scientifically ascertained the death of the Pope. He does not “hit” his head. Then the Camerlengo ceremonially say to those around him, “The Pope is truly dead.” He then invites everyone in the room to kneel and Pray Psalm 130 (De Profundis), a Penitential Psalm. Traditionally, the Fisherman’s Ring is signet ring that is used to seal papal documents. In what has traditionally been a private ceremony, a small group of cardinals, together with members of the papal household and the Swiss Guard, enter the pope’s apartments to witness the ring’s destruction. After the ring has been inspected by those present, the Camerlengo defaces the ring with a silver knife. After a second inspection, the ring is placed on a lead block and struck with a silver mallet by the Camerlengo until it is destroyed.
